Writing Graduate Reporting for Duty!

Well, I did it. It was a long journey getting to a point of degree in hand, but even though I've always been writing, and publishing, but as of June 11, 2026 I am now officially a card-carrying member of the graduate club.

In 2023, when I decided to return to school to finish my degree I knew I wanted to somehow focus on writing. The problem was, I had started my degree in the acting stream. I had spent years in acting class, dance, voice and diction, intro to film. I wanted to use all the hard work I'd already put in towards finishing this degree. My first year, I used to catch up on some necessary electives, but really thought hard on what the best next step would be from there.
After several discussions with my advisors it was suggested, with my experience in writing that I could shift my major to the Playwriting program. I will be honest, when the suggestion was made, I didn't even think twice about it. Writing was writing right? Wrong!
I had never written a play before, not a proper one at least. Sure, in highschool and even in early University, I had written some scripts, for small skits, or taken an existing piece of media and adapted it into a short scene. I had even written a silent film... but that shot list had been for me, and my actors not for actual production. A full blown original play? Never in my wildest dreams.
If you're already a fan, or just discovering me now I will tell you... a girl loves descriptions. My prose is where I give you my backstory, where I share the characters thoughts and internal struggles. Now, I had to learn to rely almost entirely on dialogue to tell a complete story! My first attempts were painful, unnecesary exposition galore. However, as the year progressed and we read more plays, saw more plays, I found that dialogue flow suddenly came quite naturally. Step by step, I learned a whole new form of writing and what had felt like an impossible task was completed. I had written my first play, and it made sense start to finish. Now, several plays in I have found a new passion for it. I have also discovered that every new writing form learned only serves to make you better overall.
As I venture on the journey of my two new novels, both of which are wildly outside my previous comfort zone, I have found my use of dialogue much easier. My characters don't just speak for the sake of it, everything has a purpose, everything drives the story forward.
I am so grateful to have put myself on this journey of learning and I hope to continue!
Stay tuned for updates on my projects as I hope to start sharing my journey more very soon.
